Valuation guide
William Wendt painting value: what matters
Wendt painted for more than fifty years, in Chicago and then across California, so values for his work vary widely. These are the questions a specialist asks when looking at a Wendt. We don't publish price lists, because a figure without the painting in front of us would be a guess.
Subject
Wendt is best known for the structured California landscapes of his mature years: canyon roads, rolling hills, groves of sycamore and eucalyptus, and mountain views. The gallery's past sales include 15 of these and 2 coast and Catalina Island subjects.
Medium and scale
Nearly all of his work is oil on canvas. Finished paintings generally rank above sketches, and larger canvases above small ones, though a strong small picture holds its own. Measure the image area, not the frame.
Date and place
Wendt's style changed noticeably between about 1912 and 1915, when his forms grew firmer and his brushwork more deliberate. A date on the painting helps place it in that development.
Condition
Look for tears, flaking, relining, retouching or a darkened varnish that dulls Wendt's greens. Treatment belongs with a conservator, after advice.
Labels and provenance
Labels from exhibitions and dealers, plus inscriptions and family records, help document a Wendt. Photograph everything on the back.
Authenticity
Wendt's popularity means reproductions, copies and misattributions turn up. Signature, technique, materials and documented history all play a part. A dealer who regularly handles California paintings can tell you quickly whether a work deserves closer study.

Questions owners ask
- How much is a William Wendt painting worth?
- It depends on the painting. Wendt's work ranges from small oil sketches to large finished canvases, and values differ widely. The gallery can give an informed view once it has seen photographs and the dimensions.
- Can Steven Stern Fine Arts appraise my Wendt?
- The gallery offers confidential evaluations and lists fine art appraisals among its services. Let us know whether you need a valuation to sell, or a formal appraisal for insurance, estate or donation purposes.
- My painting is small. Is it still of interest?
- Yes. The gallery has sold Wendt canvases as small as 10 by 14 inches. Subject, date and quality matter as much as size.
- Is it a painting or a print?
- Wendt's landscapes have been widely reproduced. Photograph the surface at an angle and look closely; we can help you tell the difference.
